Bunjevci

  • Bunjevci – Bunjevci are small ethnic group whose members mostly live in northern Vojvodina. There are 19,766 Bunjevci in Vojvodina. They speak (or have spoken) a specific Ikavian-Shtokavian dialect of Serbo-Croatian language. In census, they declare their language as Bunjevac or Serbian (in 2002 census, there was 35,826 ethnic Serbs in Subotica municipality, but there was also as much as 69,155 speakers of Serbian language, meaning that many of Bunjevci and Croats declared Serbian as their language. According to the same census there was 16,688 declared Croats in Subotica municipality, but only 8,806 declared speakers of Croatian language. Bunjevac was not listed in 2002 census results, but speakers of this language were included into category "other languages". In Subotica municipality there was 8,914 speakers of "other languages" in 2002 and 16,254 declared ethnic Bunjevci). The largest concentration of Bunjevci could be found in the municipalities of Subotica (10.95%) and Sombor (2.8%). Members of Bunjevci community are divided according to declaration of nationality and many also declare themselves as Croats or Yugoslavs. This nationality division also divide some Bunjevac families and there are many cases in which one sibling has declared as Bunjevac, while the other one has declared as Croat.
