Esoteric Christianity

Esoteric Christianity is an ensemble of spiritual currents which regard Christianity as a mystery religion, and profess the existence and possession of certain esoteric doctrines or practices, hidden from the public but accessible only to a narrow circle of "enlightened", "initiated", or highly educated people.

These spiritual currents share some common denominators, such as:

  • heterodox or heretical Christian theology;
  • the four canonical gospels, various apocalyptic literature, and some New Testament apocrypha as sacred texts; and
  • disciplina arcani, a supposed oral tradition from the Twelve Apostles containing esoteric teachings of Jesus the Christ.

Famous quotes containing the words esoteric and/or christianity:

    My esoteric doctrine, is that if you entertain any doubt, it is safest to take the unpopular side in the first instance. Transit from the unpopular, is easy ... but from the popular to the unpopular is so steep and rugged that it is impossible to maintain it.
    William Lamb Melbourne, 2nd Viscount (1779–1848)

    The real security of Christianity is to be found in its benevolent morality, in its exquisite adaptation to the human heart, in the facility with which its scheme accommodates itself to the capacity of every human intellect, in the consolation which it bears to the house of mourning, in the light with which it brightens the great mystery of the grave.
    Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800–1859)
