Cebuano

Cebuano uses kuan (also spelled kuwan, kwan, or ku-an) for an object, person, place, time, action, or modifier. It can be a noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, or adverb. In context, the specific article or preposition used can be useful in determining what the speaker might be referring to (e.g. si kuan will always refer to a person). It is also used in hesitant or uncertain speech as an interjection (equivalent to English um, erm, uh). The word is also used in other languages like Maguindanao, Maranao, Pangasinense, etc., but is absent in native Tagalog where the word ano ("what", "the what") is used instead.
