Eragon (Edward Speleers) is a 15-year-old farm boy who lives in the small village of Carvahall in the fictional country of Alagaësia. The story begins with Arya, princess of Ellesméra, running for her life with a "stone" stolen from the evil king, Galbatorix. She is surrounded by a ring of fire created by Durza, a shade (dark sorceror), and to protect the "stone" from Durza she uses her magic to send it somewhere she hopes he will never find it. Meanwhile, while hunting, Eragon finds a large, blue dragon egg (Arya's "stone") from which hatches a blue dragon. There is another dragon rider nearby, Brom, whose dragon had been killed long before, and Eragon's connection with the newborn dragon jars him awake. Eragon decides to keep the baby dragon a secret. He takes care of the dragon while it grows larger and stronger. The evil king Galbatorix sends the Ra'zac (his monster minions) after Eragon and his dragon because he wants to be the only dragon rider in existence. Eragon's dragon grows up rapidly, and she and Eragon can hear each other's thoughts. The dragon tells Eragon that her name is Saphira. When many people are killed because the Ra'zac are hunting him, Eragon hurries home to protect his uncle, but Saphira picks him up and tells him that the monsters are after him. When he finally gets home, Eragon finds his uncle dead and blames Saphira, so he tells her to go away. As he covers up his uncle's body, a man, Brom, comes to the door, and because of his rage, Eragon charges at him with a large stick, but Brom defends himself and realizes that Eragon is a new, inexperienced dragon rider. Along the way to find the Varden (rebel freedom fighters), Eragon learns magic, swordfighting, and how to ride his dragon, Saphira, from Brom so that he may fulfill his destiny: to overthrow the tyrannical empire of evil king, Galbatorix.
