Health
Setters have a few genetic problems that may occasionally occur. Canine hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, congenital deafness (affecting 12.4% of the specimens of the breed), canine hypothyroidism, and autoimmune thyroiditis (affects 27.4% of specimens) are some of the more well-known ailments that can affect this dog. A specific form of cancer is also common in older members of the breed. Some lines are prone to allergies including food allergies. Life expectancy is between 11 to 12 years, though 13 to 15 years is not uncommon..

Famous quotes containing the word health:
“In the continual enterprise of trying to guide appropriately, renegotiate with, listen to and just generally coexist with our teenage children, we ourselves are changed. We learn even more clearly what our base-line virtues are. We listen to our teenagers and change our minds about some things, stretching our own limits. We learn our own capacity for flexibility, firmness and endurance.”
—Jean Jacobs Speizer. Ourselves and Our Children, by Boston Womens Health Collective, ch. 4 (1978)
“To be stupid and selfish and to have good health are the three requirements for happiness, though if stupidity is lacking, the others are useless.”
—Gustave Flaubert (18211880)
“The debt was the most sacred obligation incurred during the war. It was by no means the largest in amount. We do not haggle with those who lent us money. We should not with those who gave health and blood and life. If doors are opened to fraud, contrive to close them. But dont deny the obligation, or scold at its performance.”
—Rutherford Birchard Hayes (18221893)
