Energy in Afghanistan - Solar

Solar

In 1991, a new 72-collector solar installation was completed in Kabul at a cost of $364 million. The installation heated 40,000 liters of water to an average temperature of 60°C around the clock. The use of solar power is becoming wide spread in Afghanistan. Solar-powered street lights are seen in several Afghan cities and towns, including the capital Kabul. Many villagers in rural parts of the country are also buying solar panels and using them.

Famous quotes containing the word solar:

Our civilization has decided ... that determining the guilt or innocence of men is a thing too important to be trusted to trained men.... When it wants a library catalogued, or the solar system discovered, or any trifle of that kind, it uses up its specialists. But when it wishes anything done which is really serious, it collects twelve of the ordinary men standing round. The same thing was done, if I remember right, by the Founder of Christianity.
    Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936)

The solar system has no anxiety about its reputation, and the credit of truth and honesty is as safe; nor have I any fear that a skeptical bias can be given by leaning hard on the sides of fate, of practical power, or of trade, which the doctrine of Faith cannot down-weigh.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Lincoln becomes the American solar myth, the chief butt of American credulity and sentimentality.
    —H.L. (Henry Lewis)
