Empty Nose Syndrome

In otolaryngology, empty nose syndrome (ENS) describes a nose that has been physiologically crippled by excessive surgical removal of turbinates in the nose (mainly the inferior turbinates) in a surgical procedure known as 'turbinectomy' or 'conchotomy'. It is therefore an iatrogenic condition that can and should be avoided.

Famous quotes containing the words empty, nose and/or syndrome:

Boy, I hate their empty shows,
    Persian garlands I detest,
Bring me not the late-blown rose
    Lingering after all the rest:
    Plainer myrtle pleases me
    Thus outstretched beneath my vine,
    Myrtle more becoming thee,
    Waiting with thy master’s wine.
    Horace [Quintus Horatius Flaccus] (65–8)

My uncle Toby had scarce a heart to retalliate upon a fly.
Go,—says he, one day at dinner, to an over-grown one which had buzz’d about his nose ... go poor Devil, get thee gone, why should I hurt thee?—This world surely is wide enough to hold both thee and me.
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)

Women are taught that their main goal in life is to serve others—first men, and later, children. This prescription leads to enormous problems, for it is supposed to be carried out as if women did not have needs of their own, as if one could serve others without simultaneously attending to one’s own interests and desires. Carried to its “perfection,” it produces the martyr syndrome or the smothering wife and mother.
    Jean Baker Miller (20th century)
