Arts

Emperor Yang was also a patron of the arts, having expanded the number of foreign orchestras (from across Asia) at the Sui court from seven to nine. Famous quotes containing the word arts:

If it were not for the intellectual snobs who pay—in solid cash—the tribute which philistinism owes to culture, the arts would perish with their starving practitioners. Let us thank heaven for hypocrisy.
    Aldous Huxley (1894–1963)

... the creator of the new composition in the arts is an outlaw until he is a classic.
    Gertrude Stein (1874–1946)

It never was in the power of any man or any community to call the arts into being. They come to serve his actual wants, never to please his fancy.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
