Emory Tate

Emory A. Tate, Jr. (born December 27, 1958, Chicago, Illinois) is an American International Master of chess. His FIDE rating is 2322 on the November 2009 rating list, making him the 277th highest-rated player in the United States and number 6503 in the world.

His highest FIDE rating was 2413 on the October 2006 rating list, which made him the 72nd highest-rated player in the United States and among the top 2000 players in the world. Tate's USCF rating was 2455 on the October 2006 list.

Tate has earned a reputation as a creative and dangerous tactician on the U.S. chess circuit, where he has won about 80 tournament games against Grandmasters. Tate won the United States Armed Forces championship five times. He is one of the highest-rated African-American chess players.
