Withdrawal
As Amtrak F40PHs increased in number the SDP40F was withdrawn from service. The last revenue run of an SDP40F under Amtrak was in 1985. In an unusual move for modern railroading, 18 were traded by Amtrak to the Santa Fe Railroad in 1984 to be reconditioned for use as freight locomotives. In exchange, Amtrak received 43 smaller locomotives for use in switching service.
The last run of an SDF40-2 on BNSF took place in 2001. All units were retired in 2002, and most were scrapped in Topeka, Kansas between 2002 and 2004.

Famous quotes containing the word withdrawal:
“A separation situation is different for adults than it is for children. When we were very young children, a physical separation was interpreted as a violation of our inalienable rights....As we grew older, the withdrawal of love, whether that meant being misunderstood, mislabeled or slighted, became the separation situation we responded to.”
—Roger Gould (20th century)
“A bizarre sensation pervades a relationship of pretense. No truth seems true. A simple mornings greeting and response appear loaded with innuendo and fraught with implications.... Each nicety becomes more sterile and each withdrawal more permanent.”
—Maya Angelou (b. 1928)
