Electric Dipole Moment - Elementary Definition

Elementary Definition

In the simple case of two point charges, one with charge +q and one with charge −q, the electric dipole moment p is:

 \mathbf{p} = q\mathbf{d}

where d is the displacement vector pointing from the negative charge to the positive charge. Thus, the electric dipole moment vector p points from the negative charge to the positive charge. An idealization of this two-charge system is the electrical point dipole consisting of two (infinite) charges only infinitesimally separated, but with a finite p.

Famous quotes containing the words elementary and/or definition:

    If men as individuals surrender to the call of their elementary instincts, avoiding pain and seeking satisfaction only for their own selves, the result for them all taken together must be a state of insecurity, of fear, and of promiscuous misery.
    Albert Einstein (1879–1955)

    It’s a rare parent who can see his or her child clearly and objectively. At a school board meeting I attended . . . the only definition of a gifted child on which everyone in the audience could agree was “mine.”
    Jane Adams (20th century)
