Elbert Frank Cox - Work

Work

During his life, Cox published two articles. He expanded on the work Niels Nörlund had done on Euler polynomials as a solution to a particular difference equation; in particular, Cox introduced generalised Euler polynomials as a generalisation of Euler polynomials, and the generalised Boole summation formula as an expansion on the Boole summation formula. He also studied a number of specialised polynomials as solutions for certain differential equations. In his other paper, published in 1947, he mathematically compared three systems of grading.

Famous quotes containing the word work:

Your children and grandchildren will have their share of happiness; there’s no need to work a like a horse for them.
    Chinese proverb.

    O dearly-bought revenge, yet glorious!
Living or dying thou hast fulfill’d
The work for which thou wast foretold
To Israel, and now ly’st victorious
    Among thy slain self-kill’d
Not willingly, but tangl’d in the fold
    Of dire necessity
    John Milton (1608–1674)

A work can become modern only if it is first postmodern. Postmodernism thus understood is not modernism at its end but in the nascent state, and this state is constant.
    Jean François Lyotard (b. 1924)
