Protection and Management
The U.S. National Park Service protects, manages, and interprets El Malpais National Monument. They operate two Visitor Centers with natural history displays, literature, maps, and staff with helpful information. The Northwest New Mexico Visitor Center is just south of Exit 85 off I-40 in Grants, New Mexico. The El Malpais Information Center is 28 miles down Highway 53 south of I-40 Exit 81.
The adjacent El Malpais National Conservation Area is protected and managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. They staff the El Malpais Conservation Area Ranger Station 8 miles down State Highway 117 south of I-40 Exit 89.
The Cibola National Forest conserves large natural areas, wildlife, and habitats in the surrounding region as well.

Famous quotes containing the words protection and/or management:
“If one really wishes to know how justice is administered in a country, one does not question the policemen, the lawyers, the judges, or the protected members of the middle class. One goes to the unprotectedthose, precisely, who need the lawss protection most!and listens to their testimony.”
—James Baldwin (19241987)
“No officer should be required or permitted to take part in the management of political organizations, caucuses, conventions, or election campaigns. Their right to vote and to express their views on public questions, either orally or through the press, is not denied, provided it does not interfere with the discharge of their official duties. No assessment for political purposes on officers or subordinates should be allowed.”
—Rutherford Birchard Hayes (18221893)
