Official Victim Count
1500 people were considered missing immediately after the crash. The Dutch government originally estimated a death toll of over 200. In the end, the official death toll on the ground stood at 47, considerably lower than expected. The plane carried only the flight crew and one non-revenue passenger, thus the total number of deaths is 51. At the time of the crash many potential victims were not at home, possibly because of the pleasant weather on the evening of the crash. Twenty-six victims were found. Eleven of these had been taken to the hospital.

Famous quotes containing the words official, victim and/or count:
“There are few ironclad rules of diplomacy but to one there is no exception. When an official reports that talks were useful, it can safely be concluded that nothing was accomplished.”
—John Kenneth Galbraith (b. 1908)
“Each victim of suicide gives his act a personal stamp which expresses his temperament, the special conditions in which he is involved, and which, consequently, cannot be explained by the social and general causes of the phenomenon.”
—Emile Durkheim (18581917)
“I admire people who are suited to the contemplative life.... They can sit inside themselves like honey in a jar and just be. Its wonderful to have someone like that around, you always feel you can count on them. You can go away and come back, you can change your mind and your hairdo and your politics, and when you get through doing all these upsetting things, you look around and there they are, just the way they were, just being.”
—Elizabeth Janeway (b. 1913)
