Edward Colston - Colston and Bristol Today

Colston and Bristol Today

A statue, designed by John Cassidy, was erected in the centre of Bristol in 1895 commemorating Colston. In 1998, however, "someone scrawled on its base the name of one of the professions in which he made his fortune: SLAVE TRADER." He is widely viewed as an inspirational figure for the city, due to his donations of money to schools and other causes. His name permeates the city in such landmarks as Colston Tower, Colston Hall, Colston Avenue, Colston Street, Colston's Girls' School and Colston's School. He is also remembered, particularly in schools, by Colston's Day, on 13 November. A regional bread bun, the Colston bun, is named after him.

One of the Houses in St. Mary Redcliffe and Temple school is named after Colston, along with Cannynge, Francombe and Cartwright.

Famous quotes containing the words bristol and/or today:

    Through the port comes the moon-shine astray!
    It tips the guard’s cutlass and silvers this nook;
    But ‘twill die in the dawning of Billy’s last day.
    A jewel-block they’ll make of me to-morrow,
    Pendant pearl from the yard-arm-end
    Like the ear-drop I gave to Bristol Molly—
    O, ‘tis me, not the sentence they’ll suspend.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

    If Botticelli were alive today he’d be working for Vogue.
    Peter Ustinov (b. 1921)
