O'Neal died in Florence, Alabama. His son, Emmet O'Neal, followed in his footsteps and served two terms as Governor of Alabama from 1911 to 1915. The great grand-daughter and grand-daughter of the O'Neals - Mrs. Lisa O'Neal Reed - is married to the Mayor of Tupelo, Miss. - the Hon. Jack Reed, Jr.
