History
In 1974, the City Centre Place shopping mall was completed within the larger Edmonton Centre development; TD Tower was added in 1976. In 1978, Oxford Tower and the Sutton Place Hotel were built on the north edge of the site. Across the street a new development was in planning. The original plan for what was then called Eaton's Centre, announced in 1980, called for several large office and apartment towers. None of the originally designed five towers was ever built but the multi-level Eaton's Centre mall and the Delta Edmonton Centre Suite Hotel were salvaged from the project.
After the demise of the Eaton's department store in 1999, Eaton's Centre and Edmonton Centre, formerly two independent malls, were redeveloped into one shopping complex connected by a newer and larger pedestrian bridge spanning 101 Street (that itself contains a number of shops). The Bay, a former Eaton's competitor, moved into part of the former Eaton's store, with the remainder of the store also partially converted into a parking garage and call centre.
The former Bay location (which was a Woodward's store prior to 1993) in the Edmonton Centre, was heavily renovated and converted into smaller retail stores. It also is the Edmonton headquarters of CBC stations CBX (AM), CBX-FM, CHFA (AM), CBXT and CBXFT.
Edmonton City Centre also has an Empire Theatres location (formerly Cineplex Odeon) and pedway connections to Manulife Place and the LRT.
