Edgemont Village - History

History

Residential development in the Capilano Highlands area began in the late 1930s, following the completion of the Lions Gate Bridge. In 1947, the first shops opened, including a dry goods store, a restaurant, and a pharmacy. As the surrounding residential developments grew in size, so did the commercial area, and in 1955, business owners formed the Highlands Business Association. Other developments included a branch of the District of North Vancouver public library, a fire station (since relocated), and a community policing office.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

America is, therefore the land of the future, where, in the ages that lie before us, the burden of the World’s history shall reveal itself. It is a land of desire for all those who are weary of the historical lumber-room of Old Europe.
    Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831)

When the landscape buckles and jerks around, when a dust column of debris rises from the collapse of a block of buildings on bodies that could have been your own, when the staves of history fall awry and the barrel of time bursts apart, some turn to prayer, some to poetry: words in the memory, a stained book carried close to the body, the notebook scribbled by hand—a center of gravity.
    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)

The history of this country was made largely by people who wanted to be left alone. Those who could not thrive when left to themselves never felt at ease in America.
    Eric Hoffer (1902–1983)
