History
The airline was founded on 19 October 1995 in Bassersdorf, Switzerland, with just one aircraft, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83. The fleet was subsequently expanded and renewed. In 1998, new Airbus A320 aircraft were introduced to replace the MD-83s, and in 1999 long-haul flights were commenced using the Airbus A330-200. AS of March 2011, Edelweiss Air added the larger Airbus A330-300 to its fleet, with an order having been filed on 5 April 2010.
Until November 2008, Edelweiss Air was wholly owned by Kuoni Travel Ltd and had 190 employees, when the operating rights were sold to Swiss International Air Lines, in exchange for sale rights of hotel capacities via the Swiss sales network. As Swiss International Airlines have since been acquired by Lufthansa, Edelweiss Air also has become a subsidiary of the largest German airline, though it is managed independently.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“Revolutions are the periods of history when individuals count most.”
—Norman Mailer (b. 1923)
“The thing that struck me forcefully was the feeling of great age about the place. Standing on that old parade ground, which is now a cricket field, I could feel the dead generations crowding me. Here was the oldest settlement of freedmen in the Western world, no doubt. Men who had thrown off the bands of slavery by their own courage and ingenuity. The courage and daring of the Maroons strike like a purple beam across the history of Jamaica.”
—Zora Neale Hurston (18911960)
“A man acquainted with history may, in some respect, be said to have lived from the beginning of the world, and to have been making continual additions to his stock of knowledge in every century.”
—David Hume (17111776)
