Economy of Vancouver - Film

Film

The sobriquet "Hollywood North" has been applied to Vancouver; it hosts the production of approximately ten percent of Hollywood's movies. Many U.S. television and films series are shot exclusively in Vancouver. This is due to multiple factors, including being in the same time zone as Los Angeles, tax credits provided by the BC government, and the fact that in the city and its environments there are numerous "looks" that can make Vancouver seem like many different locations around the world. Today, Vancouver is North America's third largest producer of movies after Los Angeles and New York, and North America's second largest producer of television shows.

Famous quotes containing the word film:

Television does not dominate or insist, as movies do. It is not sensational, but taken for granted. Insistence would destroy it, for its message is so dire that it relies on being the background drone that counters silence. For most of us, it is something turned on and off as we would the light. It is a service, not a luxury or a thing of choice.
David Thomson, U.S. film historian. America in the Dark: The Impact of Hollywood Films on American Culture, ch. 8, William Morrow (1977)

A film is a petrified fountain of thought.
    Jean Cocteau (1889–1963)

Is America a land of God where saints abide for ever? Where golden fields spread fair and broad, where flows the crystal river? Certainly not flush with saints, and a good thing, too, for the saints sent buzzing into man’s ken now are but poor- mouthed ecclesiastical film stars and cliché-shouting publicity agents.
Their little knowledge bringing them nearer to their ignorance,
Ignorance bringing them nearer to death,
But nearness to death no nearer to God.
    Sean O’Casey (1884–1964)
