Economy of Eritrea - National Service

National Service

Eritrea makes extensive use of compulsory labour through "national service". After a 6-month period of military training, persons may work on government projects or with private enterprises, with the private company paying a charge to the government but the worker only receiving standard national service wages.

See the decision of the United Kingdom Asylum and Immigration Tribunal in MA (CG).

Famous quotes containing the words national and/or service:

We are constantly thinking of the great war ... which saved the Union ... but it was a war that did a great deal more than that. It created in this country what had never existed before—a national consciousness. It was not the salvation of the Union, it was the rebirth of the Union.
    Woodrow Wilson (1856–1924)

Night City was like a deranged experiment in Social Darwinism, designed by a bored researcher who kept one thumb permanently on the fast-forward button. Stop hustling and you sank without a trace, but move a little too swiftly and you’d break the fragile surface tension of the black market; either way, you were gone ... though heart or lungs or kidneys might survive in the service of some stranger with New Yen for the clinic tanks.
    William Gibson (b. 1948)
