Tensions Within The Eco-Socialist Discourse

Reflecting tensions within the environmental and socialist movements, there is some conflict of ideas. In practice however, a synthesis is emerging which calls for democratic regulation of industry in the interests of people and the environment, nationalisation of some key (environmental) industries, local democracy and an extension of co-ops and the library principle.

Famous quotes containing the words tensions and/or discourse:

The three of them are enveloped
turning now to go crosstown in their
sense of each other, of pleasure,
    of weather, of corners,
    of leisurely tensions between them
    and private silence.
    Denise Levertov (b. 1923)

In my experience, persons, when they are made the subject of conversation, though with a Friend, are commonly the most prosaic and trivial of facts. The universe seems bankrupt as soon as we begin to discuss the character of individuals. Our discourse all runs to slander, and our limits grow narrower as we advance. How is it that we are impelled to treat our old Friends so ill when we obtain new ones?
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
