The Eastern Iron Brigade or First Iron Brigade was a brigade of infantry that served in the Union Army of the Potomac during the American Civil War. For much of its service, it was designated as the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, I Corps. It had a few commanding officers Such as General John P. Hatch and General Walter Phelps Jr. to name a few, but its history of hard fighting men never changed, and its reputation lived on long after the brigade was dismantled due to such a high casualty rate.

Famous quotes containing the words eastern, iron and/or brigade:
“All the morning we had heard the sea roar on the eastern shore, which was several miles distant.... It was a very inspiriting sound to walk by, filling the whole air, that of the sea dashing against the land, heard several miles inland. Instead of having a dog to growl before your door, to have an Atlantic Ocean to growl for a whole Cape!”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“... hurled religiously
Upon your business of humility
Into the iron forestries of hell....”
—Allen Tate (18991979)
“[John] Broughs majority is glorious to behold. It is worth a big victory in the field. It is decisive as to the disposition of the people to prosecute the war to the end. My regiment and brigade were both unanimous for Brough [the Union party candidate for governor of Ohio].”
—Rutherford Birchard Hayes (18221893)
