Eastern Arabic Numerals - Other Names

Other Names

These numbers are known as أرقام هندية ("Indian numbers") in Arabic. They are sometimes also called "Indic Numerals" in English. However, this nomenclature is sometimes discouraged as it leads to confusion with the numerals used in the scripts of India (see Indian numerals).

Famous quotes containing the word names:

If goodness were only a theory, it were a pity it should be lost to the world. There are a number of things, the idea of which is a clear gain to the mind. Let people, for instance, rail at friendship, genius, freedom, as long as they will—the very names of these despised qualities are better than anything else that could be substituted for them, and embalm even the most envenomed satire against them.
    William Hazlitt (1778–1830)

“Well then, it’s Granny speaking: ‘I dunnow!
Mebbe I’m wrong to take it as I do.
There ain’t no names quite like the old ones, though,
Nor never will be to my way of thinking.
One mustn’t bear too hard on the newcomers,
But there’s a dite too many of them for comfort....’”
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)
