He then cut ties with Bagan and formed East Bengal club on 1 August 1920. The club made history in 1997 when they became the first Indian football club to join official Asian competition when they played in the Asian Cup Winners Cup.

East Bengal has a long-standing rivalry with neighbours Mohun Bagan, with whom it contests the Kolkata derby.
