Research Areas

Earthwatch volunteers partner with leading scientists in the field to conduct valuable research that makes a difference in the world across four vital areas:

  • Climate Change - Climate change poses one of the greatest challenges to the planet. Earthwatch supports research that improves the understanding of how climate change is affecting different environments, and they find ways to help communities migrate the impacts and/or adapt to the changes.
  • Cultural Heritage - This research shines a light on the combined genetic, ecological, cultural, and linguistic variation discovered in the native biological and cultural communities. These research programs unearth the past in a way that safeguards the future.
  • Habitat - The goal of this research is to enhance and protect biodiversity in global ecosystems that provide valuable goods and services, such as clean drinking water, food, timber and medicines.
  • Ocean Health - This research seeks to protect marine biodiversity with a focus on those parts of the ocean most quickly impacted by society, such as the highly threatened coastal habitats including mangroves and coral reefs.

Famous quotes containing the words research and/or areas:

One of the most important findings to come out of our research is that being where you want to be is good for you. We found a very strong correlation between preferring the role you are in and well-being. The homemaker who is at home because she likes that “job,” because it meets her own desires and needs, tends to feel good about her life. The woman at work who wants to be there also rates high in well-being.
    Grace Baruch (20th century)

The planet on which we live is poorly organized, many areas are overpopulated, others are reserved for a few, technology’s potential is only in part realized, and most people are starving.
    Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921–1990)
