An Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) is a safety device used in electrical installations with high earth impedance to prevent shock. It detects small stray voltages on the metal enclosures of electrical equipment, and interrupts the circuit if a dangerous voltage is detected. Once widely used, more recent installations instead use residual current circuit breakers which instead detect leakage current directly.

Famous quotes containing the words earth and/or circuit:
“Man hath still either toys or care:
But hath no root, nor to one place is tied,
But ever restless and irregular,
About this earth doth run and ride.
He knows he hath a home, but scarce knows where;
He says it is so far,
That he has quite forgot how to go there.”
—Henry Vaughan (16221695)
“The Father and His angelic hierarchy
That made the magnitude and glory there
Stood in the circuit of a needles eye.”
—William Butler Yeats (18651939)
