An ear tag is a plastic or metal object used for identification of domestic livestock and other animals. If the ear tag uses Radio Frequency Identification RFID technology, then it is often referred to as an electronic ear tag. Electronic ear tags conform international standards ISO 11784 and ISO 11785 working at 134,2 kHz, as well as ISO/IEC 18000-6C operating in the UHF spectrum. There are other non-standard systems such as Destron working at 125 kHz. Although there are many shapes of ear tags, these can be classified in two simple types:
- Flag shape ear tags
Those with flat wide plastic surfaces designed to present the ID code handwritten or printed by laser, ink or both.
- Button shape ear tags
Those small, flat and cylindrical. Although it can be printed with an ID code, since the size is small it is mainly designed to carry an RFID coil.

Famous quotes containing the words ear and/or tag:
“Coal is a portable climate. It carries the heat of the tropics to Labrador and the polar circle; and it is the means of transporting itself whithersoever it is wanted. Watt and Stephenson whispered in the ear of mankind their secret, that a half-ounce of coal will draw two tons a mile, and coal carries coal, by rail and by boat, to make Canada as warm as Calcutta, and with its comfort brings its industrial power.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“I believe in the flesh and the appetites,
Seeing, hearing, feeling, are miracles, and each part and tag of me
is a miracle.
Divine am I inside and out, and I make holy whatever I touch or am touchd from,
The scent of these arm-pits aroma finer than prayer,
This head more than churches, bibles, and all the creeds.”
—Walt Whitman (18191892)
