Eadwald of East Anglia - Coinage

Coinage

Almost all that known about Eadwald comes from coins inscribed with his name. These are very rare today: only around twelve are known to exist. The coinage of Mercia was minted in East Anglia during the period when Offa of Mercia controlled East Anglia and the same moneyers produced coins for Eadwald that were of a distinctive similar style to those of Offa, and which included runic letters. After Eadwald's coinage ceased, a new coinage of Coenwulf's began by about 805, and it is likely that Coenwulf had forcibly re-established Mercian dominance there by this time.
