Invariant Polynomial
E8 is believed to be the automorphism group of either a qunitic or an octic symmetric polynomial invariant but, unlike the other exceptional Lie groups, this has never been constructed (as of 2012). Polynomial invariants are important as they form the basis of terms of the action in field theory.
