  • 1983 President Ronald Reagan awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Malone died on December 27, 1986 at Charlottesville, Virginia.

Malone died in Virginia. He is buried at the University of Virginia Cemetery and Columbarium in Charlottesville.
