At the end of the summer season, Drum Corps International (DCI) World Class corps compete to earn the title of DCI World Class Champion (formerly DCI Division I World Champion). The championships consist of 3 rounds—Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals—held on the first or second Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of August. Through 2010, all active World Class corps (23 corps as of 2010) competed in the Quarterfinals, with the top 17 advancing to the Semifinals. The top 12 corps from Semifinals then advanced to the Finals. Since the 2011 season, all active DCI corps (Open and World Class) have been permitted to compete for the championship. In this format, over 40 corps compete in Quarterfinals, while the top 25 advance to Semifinals, and the best 12 advancing to Finals. The champion is determined by the overall high score in the Finals competition. There are also a number of caption awards (high brass, high percussion, high visual, etc.), though the process of determination for those awards has changed from year to year.
In DCI's 41-season history, only 8 corps have won the title (including 3 ties):
- Blue Devils – 15 titles (2 ties)
- The Cadets – 10 titles (1 tie)
- The Cavaliers – 7 titles (1 tie)
- Santa Clara Vanguard – 6 titles (1 tie)
- Madison Scouts – 2 titles
- Phantom Regiment – 2 titles (1 tie)
- Anaheim Kingsmen – 1 title
- Star of Indiana – 1 title
The Kingsmen and Star of Indiana are no longer in active competition. The remaining six corps are often referred to as the "Top 6", due to their consistently high performance and fan support. These corps also typically attract the greatest number of prospective members each year. The historical "Top 6" corps have not finished in positions 1–6 every year, however; since 1987, only six corps outside the "Top 6" (excluding Star of Indiana) have managed to place in one of the top six positions, and only two have ever finished higher than fourth.

Famous quotes containing the words drum, corps, world, class and/or champions:
“It shall be said that gods are stone.
Shall a dropped stone drum on the ground,
Flung gravel chime? Let the stones speak
With tongues that talk all tongues.”
—Dylan Thomas (19141953)
“Lamour pour lui, pour le corps humain, cest de même un intérêt extrêmement humanitaire et une puissance plus éducative que toute la pédagogie du monde!”
—Thomas Mann (18751955)
“Women realize that we are living in an ungoverned world. At heart we are all pacifists. We should love to talk it over with the war-makers, but they would not understand. Words are so inadequate, and we realize that the hatred must kill itself; so we give our men gladly, unselfishly, proudly, patriotically, since the world chooses to settle its disputes in the old barbarous way.”
—General Federation Of Womens Clubs (GFWC)
“There is ... a class of fancies, of exquisite delicacy, which are not thoughts, and to which, as yet, I have found it absolutely impossible to adapt language.... Now, so entire is my faith in the power of words, that at times, I have believed it possible to embody even the evanescence of fancies such as I have attempted to describe.”
—Edgar Allan Poe (18091849)
“Did all the lets and bars appear
To every just or larger end,
Whence should come the trust and cheer?
Youth must its ignorant impulse lend
Age finds place in the rear.
All wars are boyish, and are fought by boys,
The champions and enthusiasts of the state:”
—Herman Melville (18191891)
