Reception
The Radio 4 LW signal from Droitwich is by far the strongest in the UK, covering most of England, Wales, and Ireland, Benelux, parts of western Germany (including the areas where the British Forces in Germany are based) and northern France. There are supplementary long-wave transmitters in Scotland (Burghead and Westerglen, both 50 kW), with medium-wave transmitters in London (Crystal Palace 750 W), south-west England (Plymouth 1 kW), the Newcastle area (2 kW), the Carlisle area (1 kW), the Aberdeen area (2 kW), and Northern Ireland (Lisnagarvey 10 kW, Londonderry 250 W and Enniskillen 1 kW). There are no Radio 4 long-wave or medium-wave transmitters situated in Wales. The BBC had wanted to drop Radio 4 on LW, but was forced to retreat after widespread criticism from long-wave 'die-hards' Radio 4 Long Wave Campaign (including listeners in Ireland and northern France). The long-wave signal is very popular among British expats in north-west Europe. The long-wave signal on 198 kHz, BBC Radio 4, can be received on an aircraft flight deck with an ADF nav receiver while flying the North Atlantic (NAT) as far west as 30°W.

Famous quotes containing the word reception:
“I gave a speech in Omaha. After the speech I went to a reception elsewhere in town. A sweet old lady came up to me, put her gloved hand in mine, and said, I hear you spoke here tonight. Oh, it was nothing, I replied modestly. Yes, the little old lady nodded, thats what I heard.”
—Gerald R. Ford (b. 1913)
“To aim to convert a man by miracles is a profanation of the soul. A true conversion, a true Christ, is now, as always, to be made by the reception of beautiful sentiments.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“Hes leaving Germany by special request of the Nazi government. First he sends a dispatch about Danzig and how 10,000 German tourists are pouring into the city every day with butterfly nets in their hands and submachine guns in their knapsacks. They warn him right then. What does he do next? Goes to a reception at von Ribbentropfs and keeps yelling for gefilte fish!”
—Billy Wilder (b. 1906)
