Douglas Fraser - Social Activism

Social Activism

Fraser was active in politics his entire life. A Democrat, he was an unabashed liberal.

Fraser was also socially progressive. He was a vocal supporter of the civil rights movement. He strongly supported busing to achieve desegregation in the public schools, even though most UAW members did not. Despite resistance from both staff and members, he began initiatives within the UAW and the auto industry to recruit more minorities and women. He also pushed for national health insurance.

Famous quotes containing the word social:

In bourgeois society, the French and the industrial revolution transformed the authorization of political space. The political revolution put an end to the formalized hierarchy of the ancien regimé.... Concurrently, the industrial revolution subverted the social hierarchy upon which the old political space was based. It transformed the experience of society from one of vertical hierarchy to one of horizontal class stratification.
