History
The school is named after the Douglas Family, who were the previous owners of the estate and donated the land for educational purposes. It is built on the site where the gardens were originally situated and the school was opened on 2 November 1967.
As part of the PPP (Public-Private Partnership) £100million funding, Douglas Academy has been rebuilt along with various other East Dunbartonshire schools. The new Douglas Academy building replaced the old school with a modern new look from the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year, with the new building said to be bigger, more spacious and better equipped than the previous building.
In 2002 and 2008, teams from Douglas Academy were chosen to represent the United Kingdom at the European Youth Parliament in Turin and Rennes. In 2009, Douglas Academy reached the final of English-Speaking Union Scotland's Juniors Competition. The school also reached the national final of the ESU Public Speaking Competition.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“A people without history
Is not redeemed from time, for history is a pattern
Of timeless moments.”
—T.S. (Thomas Stearns)
“When the landscape buckles and jerks around, when a dust column of debris rises from the collapse of a block of buildings on bodies that could have been your own, when the staves of history fall awry and the barrel of time bursts apart, some turn to prayer, some to poetry: words in the memory, a stained book carried close to the body, the notebook scribbled by handa center of gravity.”
—Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)
“Modern Western thought will pass into history and be incorporated in it, will have its influence and its place, just as our body will pass into the composition of grass, of sheep, of cutlets, and of men. We do not like that kind of immortality, but what is to be done about it?”
—Alexander Herzen (18121870)
