Poynter dated Frankie Sandford of The Saturdays, until the pair briefly split up in March 2010. They reunited in April 2010, but split up again in November of the same year. Poynter has stated that they will not be getting back together for the third time. In February 2011, Poynter attempted to commit suicide via carbon monoxide poisoning. Unsure as to why his attempt failed he stated in McFly's autobiography 'Unsaid Things' "to this day I'm still don't know why I'm here." He then spent some time in rehab following his attempt, due to depression, drink and drug addiction. Since his release from rehab, he stated he would not drink alcohol in order to keep a healthier state of mind. As of the end of 2011, Poynter is dating artist Lara Carew-Jones.
