Dong Qichang - Painter

Painter

Famous quotes containing the word painter:

When the sword of rebellion is drawn, the sheath should be thrown away.
quoted in letter, Aug. 6, 1775, by painter John Singleton Copley on the subject of the American Revolution. British proverb.

The painter ... does not fit the paints to the world. He most certainly does not fit the world to himself. He fits himself to the paint. The self is the servant who bears the paintbox and its inherited contents.
    Annie Dillard (b. 1945)

And there’s a score of duchesses, surpassing womankind,
Or who have found a painter to make them so for pay
And smooth out stain and blemish with the elegance of his mind:
I knew a phoenix in my youth, so let them have their day.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)
