Purpose and Recognition
The D.B.A. is usually identical to a PhD in Business Administration, except that it tends more towards applied research rather than theoretical research, especially during the thesis writing phase. A few schools, such as Harvard Business School and Boston University School of Management, offer D.B.A. However, these two programs differ a lot from the widely referred to D.B.A. programs offered elsewhere in the world. These are usually offered on a part-time basis, while e.g. the D.B.A. at Harvard Business School is offered only on a full-time basis.
The portion of the program that consists of coursework may be comparable to that of a PhD. However the larger part of the program, consisting of independent research and the writing of a thesis, is geared towards more applied research in D.B.A. programs, with the research making a direct contribution to business practice. Another way to see the distinction is that PhDs aim at the creation of new theory, while D.B.A.s aim at applying theory to business problems.

Famous quotes containing the words purpose and, purpose and/or recognition:
“With the breakdown of the traditional institutions which convey values, more of the burdens and responsibility for transmitting values fall upon parental shoulders, and it is getting harder all the time both to embody the virtues we hope to teach our children and to find for ourselves the ideals and values that will give our own lives purpose and direction.”
—Neil Kurshan (20th century)
“Rule of religion: purpose breathes even in dirt and stones.”
—Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
“The person who designed a robot that could act and think as well as your four-year-old would deserve a Nobel Prize. But there is no public recognition for bringing up several truly human beings.”
—C. John Sommerville (20th century)
