Division of Shortland

The Division of Shortland is an Australian Electoral Division in the state of New South Wales. The Division closely follows the Pacific coast, on average extending only five or ten kilometres inland. Much of the western boundary is formed by Lake Macquarie. The Division stretches from Charlestown in the north to Norah Head in the south, and also includes the towns of Toukley, Doyalson, Swansea, Belmont and Gateshead.

The Division was named after Lt John Shortland, an early explorer of the Hunter Valley region. The Division was proclaimed at the redistribution of May 11, 1949, and was first contested at the 1949 Federal election. The seat is currently a safe Labor seat.

Famous quotes containing the words division of and/or division:

    For in the division of the nations of the whole earth he set a ruler over every people; but Israel is the Lord’s portion: whom, being his firstborn, he nourisheth with discipline, and giving him the light of his love doth not forsake him. Therefore all their works are as the sun before him, and his eyes are continually upon their ways.
    Apocrypha. Ecclesiasticus 17:17-9.

    Slow, slow, fresh fount, keep time with my salt tears;
    Yet slower yet, oh faintly gentle springs:
    List to the heavy part the music bears,
    “Woe weeps out her division when she sings.”
    Droop herbs and flowers;
    Fall grief in showers;
    “Our beauties are not ours”:
    Oh, I could still,
    Like melting snow upon some craggy hill,
    Drop, drop, drop, drop,
    Since nature’s pride is, now, a withered daffodil.
    Ben Jonson (1572–1637)
