Diving Petrel - Breeding

Breeding

These birds nest in colonies on islands. One white egg is laid in a burrow in turf or soft soil that is usually covered with vegetation, feathers, or small rocks. They are nocturnal at the breeding colonies. It has a long period of parental care (around 45 to 60 days) in the burrow, but once the chick fledges out to sea it is on its own.

Famous quotes containing the word breeding:

Not everyone knows how to be silent or to leave in good time. It happens that even people of good breeding fail to notice that their presence provokes in the weary or preoccupied host a feeling akin to hatred, and that this feeling is tensely concealed and covered up with lies.
    Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904)

The test of a man’s or woman’s breeding is how they behave in a quarrel. Anybody can behave well when things are going smoothly.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

The breeding we give young people is ordinarily but an additional self-love, by which we make them have a better opinion of themselves.
François, Duc De La Rochefoucauld (1613–1680)
