The Districts of the Republic of Mauritius are the second-order administrative divisions after the Territories and Dependencies of the country. Mauritius is divided into nine districts which consist of different towns and villages. The island of Rodrigues positioned some 500 kilometers east of Mauritius used the be the countries tenth district before it gained autonomous status in 2002. The Plaines Wilhems District consist mainly of four towns that is Beau Bassin/Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes, Vacoas-Phoenix, Curepipe and the fifth one is Port Louis in Port Louis District, which is also the only capital of the country. The other districts consist of different villages, some of them are divided into different suburbs. As at 31st December 2010, the urban population stood at 534,163 and rural 711,125.
