In Indonesia, a kecamatan or district is a subdivision of a regency (kabupaten) or of a city (kota). A district is itself divided into kelurahan or administrative villages.
In the Papua and West Papua provinces, kecamatan are known as distrik under the law of 2001 on "special autonomy for Papua province". This justifies "district" as the appropriate translation for "kecamatan".

Famous quotes containing the word districts:
“Cities need old buildings so badly it is probably impossible for vigorous streets and districts to grow without them.... for really new ideas of any kindno matter how ultimately profitable or otherwise successful some of them might prove to bethere is no leeway for such chancy trial, error and experimentation in the high-overhead economy of new construction. Old ideas can sometimes use new buildings. New ideas must use old buildings.”
—Jane Jacobs (b. 1916)
