Discrete Cosine Transform - Formal Definition

Formal Definition

Formally, the discrete cosine transform is a linear, invertible function (where denotes the set of real numbers), or equivalently an invertible N × N square matrix. There are several variants of the DCT with slightly modified definitions. The N real numbers x0, ..., xN-1 are transformed into the N real numbers X0, ..., XN-1 according to one of the formulas:

Famous quotes containing the words formal and/or definition:

I will not let him stir
Till I have used the approvèd means I have,
With wholesome syrups, drugs, and holy prayers,

    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

Enjoying an intimate acquaintance with all their particularities in turn, he would naturally regard an abstract conception in which these were unified as a thing more misleading than enlightening.
    William James (1842–1910)
