Discovery Program - Failed Mission

Failed Mission

  • Comet Nucleus Tour (CONTOUR), a mission to visit and study comets Encke and Schwassmann-Wachmann-3. It was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida on July 3, 2002. On August 15, contact with the craft was lost. Subsequent investigation revealed that it broke into at least three pieces, the cause likely being structural failure during the rocket motor burn that was to push it from Earth orbit into a solar orbit.

Famous quotes containing the words failed and/or mission:

Psychology has nothing to say about what women are really like, what they need and what they want, essentially because psychology does not know.... this failure is not limited to women; rather, the kind of psychology that has addressed itself to how people act and who they are has failed to understand in the first place why people act the way they do, and certainly failed to understand what might make them act differently.
Naomi Weisstein, U.S. psychologist, feminist, and author. Psychology Constructs the Female (1969)

It is the mission of the twentieth century to elucidate the irrational.
    Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1907–1961)
