Director Systems in The US
In the United States, most large cities used the Panel, Number 1 Crossbar, or Number 5 Crossbar Switching Systems rather than step-by-step equipment. Los Angeles being a small town early in the 20th century (and partly served by an independent telephone company) grew up to be a major exception. Before the advent of electronic switching systems, directors were commonly used in areas of the city served by GTE.

Famous quotes containing the words director and/or systems:
“He wrote me sad Mothers Day stories. Hed always kill me in the stories and tell me how bad he felt about it. It was enough to bring a tear to a mothers eye.”
—Connie Zastoupil, U.S. mother of Quentin Tarantino, director of film Pulp Fiction. Rolling Stone, p. 76 (December 29, 1994)
“The only people who treasure systems are those whom the whole truth evades, who want to catch it by the tail. A system is just like truths tail, but the truth is like a lizard. It will leave the tail in your hand and escape; it knows that it will soon grow another tail.”
—Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev (18181883)
