Direct Integration of A Beam

Direct Integration Of A Beam

Direct integration is a structural analysis method for measuring internal shear, internal moment, rotation, and deflection of a beam.

For a beam with an applied weight, taking downward to be positive, the internal shear force is given by taking the negative integral of the weight:

The internal moment M(x) is the integral of the internal shear:

=

The angle of rotation from the horizontal, is the integral of the internal moment divided by the product of the Young's modulus and the area moment of inertia:

Integrating the angle of rotation obtains the vertical displacement :

Famous quotes containing the words direct, integration and/or beam:

A temple, you know, was anciently “an open place without a roof,” whose walls served merely to shut out the world and direct the mind toward heaven; but a modern meeting-house shuts out the heavens, while it crowds the world into still closer quarters.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The only phenomenon with which writing has always been concomitant is the creation of cities and empires, that is the integration of large numbers of individuals into a political system, and their grading into castes or classes.... It seems to have favored the exploitation of human beings rather than their enlightenment.
    Claude Lévi-Strauss (b. 1908)

It was at that moment, just after Krug had fallen through the bottom of a confused dream and sat up on the straw with a gasp—and just before his reality, his remembered hideous misfortune could pounce upon him—it was then that I felt a pang of pity for Adam and slid towards him along an inclined beam of pale light—causing instantaneous madness, but at least saving him from the senseless agony of his logical fate.
    Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977)
