Diocese of Ripon and Leeds - History

History

The diocese of Ripon was originally created out of the dioceses of York and Chester in 1836 with Charles Thomas Longley consecrated as its first bishop. It was the first diocese to be created in England after the Reformation, and was erected on 5 October 1836 under the Established Church Act 1836.

On 3 September 1999 the diocese was renamed 'The Diocese of Ripon & Leeds' in order to reflect the demographic importance of Leeds within its boundaries.

Today, the diocesan bishop's residence and offices and the diocesan offices are based in Leeds, while the cathedral remains Ripon Cathedral. The diocese is known as Ripon and Leeds diocese, or, less often, Ripon diocese.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The history of any nation follows an undulatory course. In the trough of the wave we find more or less complete anarchy; but the crest is not more or less complete Utopia, but only, at best, a tolerably humane, partially free and fairly just society that invariably carries within itself the seeds of its own decadence.
    Aldous Huxley (1894–1963)

Every literary critic believes he will outwit history and have the last word.
    Mason Cooley (b. 1927)

All objects, all phases of culture are alive. They have voices. They speak of their history and interrelatedness. And they are all talking at once!
    Camille Paglia (b. 1947)
