Design History

Since its introduction in 1796, the dime has been issued in six different major types, excluding the 1792 "disme". The name for each type (except for the Barber dime) indicates the design on the coin's obverse.

  • Draped Bust 1796–1807
  • Capped Bust 1809–1837
  • Seated Liberty 1837–1891
  • Barber 1892–1916
  • Winged Liberty Head (Mercury) 1916–1945
  • Roosevelt 1946–present

Famous quotes containing the words design and/or history:

Humility is often only the putting on of a submissiveness by which men hope to bring other people to submit to them; it is a more calculated sort of pride, which debases itself with a design of being exalted; and though this vice transform itself into a thousand several shapes, yet the disguise is never more effectual nor more capable of deceiving the world than when concealed under a form of humility.
François, Duc De La Rochefoucauld (1613–1680)

The only history is a mere question of one’s struggle inside oneself. But that is the joy of it. One need neither discover Americas nor conquer nations, and yet one has as great a work as Columbus or Alexander, to do.
