Die Tote Stadt

Die tote Stadt (German for The Dead City) is an opera in three acts by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. The libretto is by a fictitious Paul Schott (actually a pseudonym for the true librettists, the composer and the composer’s father Julius Korngold), and is based on Bruges-la-Morte, a short novel by Georges Rodenbach.

Famous quotes containing the words die and/or tote:

    I honor your art, because you contrived it, but it only helps those who think the way you do. You may give a sick man your best potion but he’ll die if he thinks it’s poison.
    Franz Grillparzer (1791–1872)

    The head must bow, and the back will have to bend,
    Wherever the darkey may go;
    A few more days, and the trouble all will end,
    In the field where the sugar-canes grow.
    A few more days for to tote the weary load,—
    No matter, ‘t will never be light;
    A few more days till we totter on the road:—
    Then my old Kentucky home, good-night!
    Stephen Collins Foster (1826–1884)
