Devarda's Alloy - Long-debated Question of The Nascent Hydrogen

Long-debated Question of The Nascent Hydrogen

Since the mid-19th century the existence of true nascent hydrogen was repeatedly challenged. It was assumed by the supporters of this theory that before that two hydrogen atoms can recombine into a more stable H2 molecule, the labile H· free radicals are more reactive than molecular H2, a relatively weak reductant in the absence of metal catalyst. Nascent hydrogen was supposed to be responsible of the reduction of arsenate or nitrate in arsine or ammonia respectively. Nowadays, isotopic evidences have closed the nascent hydrogen debate, presently considered as a Gedanken artifact of romanticism.

Famous quotes containing the words question, nascent and/or hydrogen:

There is no question what the roll of honor in America is. The roll of honor consists of the names of men who have squared their conduct by ideals of duty.
    Woodrow Wilson (1856–1924)

A work can become modern only if it is first postmodern. Postmodernism thus understood is not modernism at its end but in the nascent state, and this state is constant.
    Jean François Lyotard (b. 1924)

All you of Earth are idiots!... First was your firecracker, a harmless explosive. Then your hand grenade. They begin to kill your own people a few at a time. Then the bomb. Then a larger bomb, many people are killed at one time. Then your scientists stumbled upon the atom bomb—split the atom. Then the hydrogen bomb, where you actually explode the air itself.
    Edward D. Wood, Jr. (1922–1978)
